John Amos’ illustrious career began in 1970 with his role as weatherman Gordon ‘Gordy’ Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Just a few years later, he made television history as James Evans Sr. in Good Times, the first TV show to portray an African American, two-parent household. His portrayal of a strong, loving father cemented his status as a beloved TV icon.

Amos also left a powerful mark with his Emmy-nominated role as the adult Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries Roots, a performance that continues to resonate with audiences today. Throughout his career, he appeared in a wide range of popular TV shows, including The West Wing, Two and a Half Men, and The Ranch. His final television role will be in the upcoming series Suits LA.

On the big screen, Amos appeared in notable films such as Coming to America and its 2021 sequel Coming 2 America, Die Hard 2, and The Beastmaster. In his final years, he worked closely with his son on a documentary about his life titled America’s Dad, a tribute to his journey as an actor and the profound impact he had on television.
