Hulu has officially decided not to renew its original drama series Black Cake for a second season, joining the recently canceled comedy-drama UnPrisoned on the chopping block.
Black Cake, based on the novel by Charmaine Wilkerson, tells the gripping story of two siblings uncovering the hidden past of their late mother through recordings she left behind. As they listen, they are confronted with shocking revelations, including hints of a murder mystery that force them to question everything they thought they knew about their family. The series stars Chipo Chung, Mia Isaac, Adrienne Warren, Ashley Thomas, and Glynn Turman.
Despite positive reviews for its eight-episode debut season, which premiered in November 2023, Hulu has decided to halt the series. The show was a hot property in 2021, with Netflix initially in the bidding race before being outbid by Hulu. Produced by a strong executive team including Oprah Winfrey, Marissa Jo Cerar, Aleksander Krutainis, Carla Gardini, and Brian Morewitz, Black Cake seemed poised for more seasons, making this cancellation a surprise to many fans.
With Black Cake and UnPrisoned both being cut, it seems Hulu is making room for new content, leaving behind what many believed had the potential for more storytelling.
